food preps for canucks
Just found a place in London Ontario to buy some food preps from. A netsearch told me that any food crossing the border (and clearing customs) is a pain in the ass. These guys are in Canada, so a better option for me. They have a small selection of Mountain House freeze dried products, and also have both US MRE's and Canadian Freddychef military style rations. Put in an initial order for 40 pounds. Got an assortment of all brands mentioned above.
Never bought shtf preps previously, other than the week or two of food usually kept in the house. This order could last me 3-4 weeks if I stretched it, maybe longer. (based on my current 2 meals a day lifestyle) Will probably add to it over the next few months. Winter here sucks anyway, might as well have plenty of food in the house just in case. I plan to sample most of it to see which ones I'd want to order more of. Will post some feedback on them a few weeks from now, after it arrives and I've sampled some of it. The company is Forest City Surplus. Check them out if interested. http://www.fcsurplus.ca/shopping/sho...d+Camping+food |
Re: food preps for canucks
Let me know how they treat you for shipping and service. Mountain Equipment Co-op selles Mountain House single ration meals too. I was hoping this dealer also sold number 10 cans, but no luck.
I guess they're a beyatch to get across the border. I'm going to have my family in Michigan bring me some next time the come for a visit. Anyways, let me know how they treat you. |
Re: food preps for canucks
Hmmm, I just noticed that it says " Property of US Government" and something about unlawful possession...
WTF? Is this safe to purchase? http://www.fcsurplus.ca/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=16785 |
Re: food preps for canucks
I live in London Ontario and have been to that store many times.
It is a beat up flea market atmosphere, but they do have survival stock and army surplus at all times. Personally, I have had good luck buying there in the past. |
Re: food preps for canucks
Not exactly giving it away, are they?

Re: food preps for canucks
These guys, also in London, sell Mountain house.
You might have to pick up the phone to order though. http://www.novacks.com/ |
Re: food preps for canucks
That Novacks link takes me to a site that looks like a travel agent or tour operator. Can't see any other links about food preps. Maybe I'm just tired...

Re: food preps for canucks
Novak's stocks and sells Mountain house.
Call them and ask for a quote. They ship worldwide. |

Re: food preps for canucks
Well my preps finally arrived earlier this week, after short delay due to an email I didn't read. I ended up having to substitute a couple items they were out of, which slowed things down a bit.
This meal was the Canadian version of an MRE. Freddychef, I think?? I was waiting until the perfect time to try one. (ie: When I was hungry) I missed supper last night, so when I woke up hungry I decided to test some of my preps. The package I opened had; - a large pouch of omelette in mushroom sauce - a large pouch of raspberry applesauce - a small pouch of bread - a small pouch of dry cereal (oat/bran with dry powdered milk) - a small pouch of instant hot chocolate - 2 small pouches of instant coffee - 2 small pouches of non-dairy powdered creamer - 1 small pouch fruit drink crystals - 1 small pouch peanut butter - 1 small pouch raspberry jam - 1 package of Trident gum - 2 small packages of salt and pepper - a plastic spoon and knife with a napkin - 1 book of matches With hot water added, the cereal was excellent, and left me wanting more of it. Boiling the pouch in water, the omelette was also excellent, as was the mushroom sauce. The bread was fresh and tasty. Warming the pouch in hot water, the raspberry applesauce was also very tasty. I'm saving the peanut butter and jam pouches to use on toast tomorrow morning. The coffee, hot chocolate, fruit drink mix, and gum will be saved for another day. I could easily survive on this kind of food if I had to. It was better than I expected. And it's nice to know the troops are eating decent grub in the field. Not that I'm a warmonger or anything. lol I give these preps 2 thumbs up for taste and variety. |

do these guys have a walk-in store ? or is it just online ? i'm just down the road here in Windsor |
Re: food preps for canucks
I'm still looking for Canadian supplier of #10 cans. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and just ordering from the US, letting them UPS it over here and I'll pay the insane customs fees.

why not just buy cans in Canada or are you looking specifically for # 10 cans ? |
Re: food preps for canucks
Yes, I just want a large amount of #10 cans that I can store in a cold room for the next few decades or until whenever they are needed. I don't want to be rotating stock or buying a little each month. If I get a bulk order of the cans, I can pack them away and not have to worry about them.

Re: food preps for canucks
well cans and fancy freeze dry stuff is cool, but dont forget the local grocery store, pretty inexpensive staples available everyday in 50 pound bags.

Re: food preps for canucks
Are you sure you're Canadian? You haven't mentioned Molsen and backbacon once.

If you are coming to London, go to Forest City Surplus as well. Great stuff. |
Re: food preps for canucks
Customs has informed me that there are no restrictions on the freeze dried meals. I'm going to try to order this week and hope everything goes smooth. Best case is they just charge me 13% GST and sales tax on the declared value.

Re: food preps for canucks
One cannot import from the manufactorer, but can from a reseller. (Ain't free trade grand?!?)
